Gage Gibson--1st Dan

My Taekwondo

The reason I joined Taekwondo was to learn to defend myself, and to spend time with my family. My dad is the instructor, and my sister is a 2nd degree black belt. We do a lot of taekwondo at home as well as at the dojang. Sometimes my sister and I free spar in the kitchen, that is fun.

I have made lots of friends in taekwondo. Timo is a good friend of mine. He moved away to France for a year. I still get to see him when my dad skypes classes  with them on Sundays. Ruari is also a good friend. He is an orange belt and is a lot of fun to spar with. Sam and Felipe are also good friends. They are yellow belts and it's a lot of fun when I have to free spar both of them at the same time.

My favorite technic in taekwondo is the flying side kick. In the old times the flying side kick was used to kick your opponent off a horse! I would like to try that someday.  I have done the flying side kick over five people and broke a board. I like doing flying side kick at demonstrations, and parades. I once did a flying side kick as an opening at a demo. We took a hula hoop and put paper on it. We drew jungs taekwondo on the front and I did a flying side kick through it and broke through the paper. It was awesome. We also do flying side kick at the end of every class. I finally got the bag to go clear to the ceiling! When the bag hits the ceiling, everyone claps, even the people watching class. That makes me feel good.

The hardest part about taekwondo for me is remembering the forms. My favorite form is koryo. I like it cause there is a lot of cool movements in it. I always get the forms mixed up, but I try not to. I like helping the lower rank students with their forms. This helps me remember them better. I like helping our new student Zoey. I got her to join taekwondo. We ride the bus together, and I help her with her forms at taekwondo.

I really like taekwondo. I work hard and have been trying to set a better example in class as a black belt for the lower rank students. If I get my first dan I am going to continue training and be a better leader in the class.
